What is ORAC?

ORAC (OXYGEN RADICAL ABSORBANCE CAPACITY) is an analytical method of measuring the antioxidant capacity of a substance developed by scientists working at the national institute of health (nih) over twenty years ago. This method quantifies the “total antioxidant capacity” of particular food or substance.

How is it calculated ?

The ORAC value of a food is calculated by placing molecules which are vulnerable to oxidation in a test tube together with molecules which generate free radical activity and a sample of the food to be tested (in our case dried Moringa leaf powder) for a specific period of time under controlled laboratory conditions. The test measures to what extent the food sample protected the vulnerable molecules from free radical oxidation (ORAC value). Adult men and women should have a daily ORAC level of 4,200 to 5,200 to effectively combat and counteract free radicals.*

ORAC values can easily be manipulated

ORAC values are expressed in micromoles trolox equivalents (TE) per 100 gram food sample, which is often expressed as XXX μmol TE per 100g. Food products lose their antioxidant absorption capacity over time, through exposure to heat, sunlight and oxidation. ORAC values can be manipulated by providing samples for testing which come straight from the processing plant. This practice has resulted in some producers and companies claiming Moringa leaf powder ORAC values of up to 157,000 μmol TE per 100g. This is not an accurate measure of the ORAC value you will receive in a product which has been packaged and shipped.

Our ORAC testing is performed on a sample from the shelves of a store where it can be purchased, which provides a more accurate representation of what the customer will receive. The ORAC score of ME Moringa powder generally approximates a high value of 77,000 μmol TE per 100g.

ORAC values are usually calculated for 100g of food. For example: the ORAC value of ME Moringa is 77,000 ORAC per 100g or 770 ORAC per gram. If you consume the suggested serving size of 5 grams of ME Moringa per day, you will have consumed a total of 5 grams x 770 ORAC, meaning that the ORAC value of the ME Moringa you consume daily is a powerful 3850 ORAC.

Other considerations

Cooking, boiling, or processing can reduce the ORAC value of nearly all vegetables by up to 90%. Somewhat more of the antioxidants remain intact when food is steamed. Since heat can significantly reduce the ORAC value of a food, we process ME Moringa leaf powder in a low heat vacuum environment, which results in a high nutritional content.
